It is believed that these holy shrines were established by the great saint "Sri Adi Shankracharya" during the 8th Century. Every year as the snow melts in the upper reaches of Himalayas, the portal for these Char Dhams are opened for the annual pilgrimage tours in the month of May. Chardham Yatra tour continues till November. After the snowfall in the month of November the portals of Chardham are closed for the next six months. Chardham Yatra is not an easy trek. Whereas Do Dhams - Gangotri & Yamunotri - are completely accessible by vehicles, the other two of the Char Dhams - Kedarnath & Badrinath - require long trek to reach to the shrine. Kedarnath Dham requires the lengthiest and the toughest trek among all of them.
